Sevren R. Gourley, Editor-in-Chief

Sevren grew up in rural Central Virginia and attended Virginia Tech as an undergraduate. After graduating with a B.A. in history, he served with the United States Peace Corps in Zambia where he worked on agricultural development initiatives and became fluent in the Lala Bemba language of the Mkushi region. Sevren extended his service in Zambia for a third year to spearhead the Appropriate Technologies Program in collaboration with D-Lab at MIT. Attracted to working with natural resources and land use by his experiences in the Peace Corps and later private-sector work in real estate development, he plans to practice energy and infrastructure law after graduation. Sevren spent his 1L summer interning with the litigation team at EarthRights International in Washington, DC and worked as a summer associate at Hunton & Williams in Richmond, VA after his 2L year. He enjoys hiking, bicycling, and gardening and has remained an avid home-brewer while in law school.

Olivia Glasscock, Managing Editor

Olivia grew up in Auburn, Alabama and attended Auburn University for her undergraduate studies in English and Political Science. While at Auburn, she was involved with the Real Food Challenge, an organization dedicated to making campus dining more sustainable. The experience helped her decide she wanted to turn her lifelong passion for conservation and sustainability into something more than a personal interest, so she left the "Loveliest Village on the Plains" for UVA to pursue a career in environmental law. She spent the first half of her 1L summer clerking for the Honorable Richard E. Moore of the Charlottesville Circuit Court and the second half interning for the Southern Environmental Law Center in Birmingham, AL. She worked with Earthjustice in Denver, CO for her 2L summer. Outside of law school school, Olivia is a dedicated backpacker, jewelry maker, runner, and coffee lover.

James Billard, Business Director

James grew up in Richmond, Virginia and attended the College of William & Mary, where he graduated with a B.A. in Economics and Government in 2014. Before attending law school, he worked as the manager of purchasing and logistics at VivaTerra International, LLC, an e-commerce retailer specializing in sustainable, artisanal goods. In law school, James has been a member of the Innocence Project, working to exonerate those wrongfully convicted in the Commonwealth of Virginia. During his 1L summer, James interned at Apex Clean Energy, a renewable energy developer based in Charlottesville, VA. For his 2L summer, he worked at Orrick, Herrington, and Sutcliffe in Washington, DC. James is an avid hiker, and enjoys traveling and playing guitar.

Joseph Zaleski, Executive Editor

Hailing originally from the great state of Florida, Joe trekked north to attend Boston College where he graduated in 2010 with degrees in political science and philosophy. During his undergraduate years, Joe served as the Opinions Editor of the student newspaper and wrote a senior thesis on federalism and Everglades restoration. Before attending law school, Joe worked in Washington, DC for several years respectively serving as a researcher and writer for an environmental non-profit, a political analyst for a financial research firm, and a legal assistant at a law firm. In the summer after his 1L year, Joe interned with the Natural Resources Section of the California Department of Justice in Los Angeles. After his 2L year he worked as a summer associate with Sidley Austin LLP in the firm’s Washington, DC office. Joe is an avid softball player and plans to lead the Journal team, The Green Machine, to intramural softball glory during his tenure as Executive Editor.

Joshua M. Allred, Submissions Editor

Joshua grew up in Idaho and graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in English. He was Copy Editor for an award-winning high school newspaper and worked in various industries before pursuing higher education. Joshua's interest in the environment stems from a rural upbringing filled with outdoor recreation and frequent family vacations to national parks. For his 1L summer, Joshua worked as a research assistant with a focus on the ethics of lawyering. For his 2L summer, Joshua worked with the Small Business Administration in Washington, D.C. Outside of law school, he enjoys college football, film and reading fiction.

Matt grew up in Connecticut and graduated from the University of Michigan in 2012. He studied environmental science and wrote his thesis on congressional word choice and sustainability. After graduating, he worked for the U.S. Department of Energy on climate change policy and sustainability. During his 1L summer, Matt worked for the Department of the Interior in the Office of the Solicitor on a variety of federal lands and water resource issues. For his 2L summer, Matt was a summer associate at Beveridge & Diamond in Washington, D.C. Matt enjoys hiking, cooking and watching the Wolverines (Go Blue!).

Kyle Burns, Projects Director

Kyle hails from Jupiter, Florida, where his interest in the environment began as a high school student in the Jupiter Environmental Research and Field Studies Academy. He attended the University of Florida, where he majored in Environmental Science and Political Science. During college, he spent summers at the United States Department of Agriculture and Environmental Law Institute. In law school, Kyle is the Director of Student Coaching for the Extramural Moot Court Team. Kyle spent his 1L summer at the Environmental Protection Agency, Region 2, in New York City. For his 2L summer, Kyle worked at Willkie Farr & Gallagher in New York City. Kyle enjoys coffee, craft beer, hiking, and Game of Thrones.

Michaela Pickus, Projects Director

Michaela grew up in McLean, Virginia and attended the College of William & Mary, where she received a B.A. in Government and Africana Studies. Michaela's research focused on the political and economic effect that natural resources have on developing countries. While in college, she was active on political campaigns and worked within the federal government. Michaela is currently a member of the Virginia Environmental Law Forum and spent her 1L summer in the National Courts Section of the Department of Justice. For her 2L summer, Michaela worked at White & Case in New York City. In her free time, she enjoys hiking, music, and art.

Daniel Lemon, Systems Director

Daniel grew up in Michigan. He attended Michigan State University, where he graduated with a double major in Business Administration and Spanish. While at Michigan State, Daniel co-chaired the Sustainability Action Committee, a group dedicated to improving the sustainable practices of the University. Daniel also studied abroad in Quito, Ecuador. Before coming to law school, Daniel worked as the business director of a moving company in East Lansing, Michigan, and as a regional sales manager for an advertising company. During his 1L summer, Daniel worked as a research assistant with Professor Michael Livermore. For his 2L summer, he worked in Cleveland, Ohio, as a summer associate with BakerHostetler.
